If the status page indicates a date of receipt of OCI documents in the Consulate then only you may make arrangements to collect the same in either of the following modes:
It is advisable to collect OCI documents in person to avoid any loss of documents by the postal agencies.
(a) In person: You have to submit your required documents for collection of the OCI documents in between 1100 to 1230 hours only (Chicago time). However, you should collect your OCI documents & surrender certificates from 1600 Hours to 1700 Hours (Chicago time) on the same day. The documents can be collected in person from the Consulate (address mentioned above) by the applicant (or through a duly authorized family member).
Please note that you get the OCI documents on the same day depending on the number of applicants come for collection of OCI documents. Also do not panic if nobody is present at the OCI window, Consulate official continuously keeps checking the OCI window. One person from family can collect OCI documents of all the family members subject to bringing authorization letter. The authority letter should include the name of the person authorized, his passport number and applicant's name along with his on-line registration number and signature. The person who has been authorized needs to show his passport to the Consulate official. Please ensure to bring the following:
- A print out of the status page (indicating the date of arrival of OCI document in the Consulate.
- Applicant’s US / foreign passport indicated in his/her application.
- Indian Passport and/or PIO card if still valid.
Note: Please ask for the surrender certificate towards renunciation of your Indian citizenship.
(b) Via mail: Those who have paid the mailing charges with their application can collect OCI documents via mail. For doing so please forward the following documents to the Consulate (address mentioned above) clearly indicating on the envelope “COLLECTION OF OCI DOCUMENTS”.
Please ensure to send the following
- US/foreign passport, the details of which were furnished in the application
- Print out of the Status Page from on-line status enquiry (indicating the date of receipt of OCI document in the Consulate
- Indian passport/PIO Card – if still valid. After cancellation these are returned back to applicant.
For (a) and (b) above, after cancellation the Indian Passport and/or PIO card and Surrender Certificate (as applicable) is returned back to the applicant.

(c) Collection of the OCI documents in India
If your OCI documents are ready for collection and you want to collect the same in India, then please send an email to us (Click Here To Send Email) stating your name, on-line registration number and the name of the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO), wherefrom you would like to collect your OCI documents.
After receipt of your email, we will send your OCI documents to the said FRRO and we will intimate to you by email about the same. However contact the FRRO only after a period of 6 weeks after receipt of our email.
This is important:
- It is obligatory to get the valid Indian Passport and/or PIO card/old OCI card cancelled before using the OCI document, to avoid inconvenience at Immigration Check Points.
- If you have renewed your US /foreign passport after doing the OCI application, we can not issue OCI douments on the Old /expired /cancelled US passport as it got expired /cancelled.
- We also can not issue OCI documents on the new passport as the old passport number appears in your OCI documents. Do not argue on this matter and waste your valuable time and delay the services of others.
- You need to apply through OCI Misc. services with new passport details. The fee is only US$ 25/- for getting new OCI documents
Your original foreign passports are required in the Consulate as we need to affix the OCI visa sticker in it. When you are collecting new OCI documents after applying through OCI Misc Service, please send your old OCI documents also, those will be cancelled and returned to you back.
